アメリカの英語教科書 Houghton Mifflin Reading
上の子供は、ディズニーの英語システムのレッスンを一通り終わっているため、その次のステップとして何をやろうかいつも悩んでいます。ワールドファミリーのショッピングサイトの商品をよく参考にするのですが、そこでアメリカの小学校で100年以上使われているアメリカ国内で最も評価の高いホートン・ミフリン社が出しているリーディングの教科書を見つけました。
リーディングなので日本の国語に当たるのですが、写真や絵が豊富で科学や社会、算数や芸術といった他の教科へリンクした題材もあり、子供の興味を引き出し、総合的に学習できる内容になっています。1年生の教科書は5冊から構成されており、とりあえず最初のＶＯＬ．１と２を購入することにしました。今までの経験上いきなり難しいものを購入するとやる気をなくしてしまうので、上の子には少々簡単そうでも、下の子供に使えると思い順番に集めることにしたのです。
本が届くと子供たちは早速喜んでみてくれました。上の子は単語がやさしいため、おおよそ読めるようです。宣伝どおりオールカラーで写真や絵が豊富。しかも、海外の本は写真が鮮やかできれいです。下の子は字が読めませんが、題材が自分の好きな虫や動物の話が多いので、写真や絵を見たりして楽しんでいます。海の生き物の話では、いろいろな魚が載っていて、普段英語名を気にもとめなかった魚の名前まで知ることができました。
この本はアメリカの児童推薦図書を中心に構成された物語を読むことになっており、一つのテーマに対して、導入→本編→応用・派生といった感じに構成されています。導入でこれからのテーマについて考え、本編で学び、最後に他の教科への関連を知る。こういった構成だと知識の定着もよくなるように思いました。また、巻末には新出単語の辞書的なページがあり、辞書をうまく引けない1年生でもすぐに意味を調べることができます。写真やイラストが豊富なので意味の推測は容易なのですが、言葉として意味を知っておくことも重要だと思うので、私のように英語のできない親にとって、こういった構成はありがたいですね。子供にも、意味が判らない単語がある場合はそこを見るようにと教えておきました。
また、この問題集のドリルもあり、学習効果を高めてくれそうです。特に、今、上の子の課題であるセンテンスを作る課題も多く。問題の質問に答えていくことで、センテンスを考える練習になります。嫌がらずに解いていくところを見ると、楽しい内容だと思います。また、切り取って、バラバラになっている物語を順番に並び替える問題など、書くだけの問題だけではないのが飽きさせないところなのかもしれません。
まだまだ使いこなせていませんが、これからどのように子供の英語学習に使えるか楽しみな教材です。
